In the old days, windmills were created so that mechanical machinery could perform physical labor. The end products are then distributed to national electrical grids and small turbines owned by individuals to distribute electricity to far flung areas and homes. There are many advantages of this kind of power. The main one, of course, is that this doesn’t produce any by-products that can be harmful to the environment. And we will never run out of this source of renewable energy. 3. Geothermal – Geothermal energy is energy obtained by tapping heat from the earth itself. Holes are drilled in certain regions, magma and radioactive decay that can be found underneath produce steam. This steam is purified and used to drive turbines. These turbines then become the power source for electric generators.

The downside to geothermal energy is the fact that it is expensive to build, and to ensure that no harmful by-products are going to be produced in the process, geothermal plants must be created accordingly. On the other hand, because the earth’s crust continuously decays replenishing the heat, it is still a renewable source of energy.

4. Hydroelectricity – The use of hydroelectric power or even hydroelectricity dates back to Ancient Greece and China where they installed waterwheels in rapidly flowing rivers to turn millstones and other equipment. Hydroelectric plants today still use the same basic principles as the historical waterwheel, but with some variations. The difference is that we use the force of the water to push the turbine which in turn powers a generator thus generating electricity. The idea here is to make use of the kinetic energy of water. To make sure that there is a steady flow of power being produced, a dam has to be built to retain the water. If there is a need for more power, the gates of the dam are opened so water can be released.

There are issues with the use of hydroelectricity. Some claim that it poses a problem for fish and aquatic plants on both sides of the dam. Because the flow of water has been altered, the nutrient rich silt which helps crops grow could be affected.

5. Bio-Fuels – Bio-fuels are also a green energy source. They have been around for a very long time however just lately, people are beginning to take notice.During photosynthesis, plants grow and produce biomass. Also known as bio matter, biomass can be used directly as fuel or to produce bio-fuels. Agriculturally produced biomass fuels, such as bio-diesel, ethanol can be burned in internal combustion engines or boilers. Typically bio-fuel is burned to release its stored chemical energy. Liquid bio-fuel which is the one used in cars is a natural and renewable domestic fuel that can only be used for diesel engines. This can be made from vegetable oils mostly soy and corn. In fact diesel engines were originally created to run on vegetable oil! The nice thing about bio-fuels is that they contains no petroleum, and they are nontoxic and biodegradable.

By fueling up with bio-fuel, you decrease the pollutants in the air because it does not emit anything. Right now, it is the only fuel approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), passed every Heath-Effects Test of the Clean Air Act and meets the requirements of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Parts of these are covered in solar panels. These objects have the space for all the panels it would need. Another way to use solar panels is by using the heat from the sun. The solar panel attracts the heat and heats up a liquid with a low boiling point. This liquid is transferred to water where steam is used in a generator. This process is simple, cheap and effective.

Solar panels come in different forms and there is no exact shape for one. There are different versions of solar power as well. There is concentrated solar power, which is a sea of mirrors combined together to attract the sun’s heat. These are usually out in the desert and use thermal energy to create ways to heat homes, heat water and power machines. This type of energy is a little more expensive than wind energy, but costs less than photovoltaic energy, which is commonly used in households.

It has become cost effective to use solar power to heat and power your home. In the beginning stages of the production of solar panels, it took adventurous people to take a chance on it. When speaking about renewable energy, we are talking about power which derives its energy from resources which will not be diminished from the use. Renewable energy is a substitute for the non-alternative energy of fossil fuel due to other reasons than non-depletion.

One fundamental advantage of renewable energy, and environmentalists’ favorite reason to tout its use, is that there are no greenhouse gases or other pollutants emitted as there are with the burning of fossil fuels. Alternative energy, or solar, water and wind power, are certainly not new although they have received much attention recently. Wind, solar and water power have been utilized as power sources in both developing and developed countries for a long time, but they have yet to be used as a primary source of energy for any big metropolitan area.

The generation of power from alternative energy sources has become somewhat more common in recent times as people have increasingly become aware of issues such as climate change due to fossil fuel byproducts and depletion and the political or social worries about nuclear power. There are numerous countries and non-profit, environmentally conscious organizations that are endorsing the use of alternative energy by enacting tax incentives for its use and by subsidizing the cost of transitioning from fossil fuel to renewable energy.

Creative Communities Protect Our Military Men and Women

Returning military personnel should have guarantees from the American people that they and their families will be protected from neglect when they return from combat. How do we accomplish this? We do what many of our soldiers did to fight for our freedoms – boots on the ground, one strategy after another. Rather, our community members should have shoes on the ground.

Communities have a responsibility to ensure that their sentiments toward the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are divided from their sentiment for the soldiers who are on the front line. There is a need for a direct focus on facilitating the course for the returning soldiers that leads to solace, hope and a retrieval of neighborhood familiarity.

Our communities should be empowered to protect and assist their reinvesting warriors for a more organized and less complicated return to working and thriving. In the U.S., there is a deficit of a national strategy to accomplish this. Our communities must take responsibility for providing for the reinvestment of warriors and neighbors as they work through their post war lives together and to incorporate the most sensitive, efficient, functional and protective mechanisms to meet the needs of our veterans and their families.

All our communities should have a bank of tools they can use to ensure the safe and effective integration of our military men and women into the communities. The “tools” that exist in each community toolkit may be different. For instance, one community may have the resources to design and execute an annual conference bringing all veterans together to discuss their needs to safely and effectively re-integrate to their communities.

Another community may have the resources to offer a Chain of Support. Within each “chain” is one volunteer from the community who has volunteered to provide what they know best. For instance, a hairdresser may offer one free haircut per week to selected veterans. A pet lover may offer his/her services to walk a pet, for free, for one veteran each weekend.

There is an abundance of creative ideas to achieve healthy and well-integrated communities who embrace the return of military men and women who have risked their mental, emotional and physical well being to protect the freedoms that allow our communities to thrive. Each community can and should step up.

Is Alternative Energy Really Needed in 2009?

At the moment, in the world we live in, the primary source of energy is derived from petroleum or oil if you like, and other mineral derived energy resources. Oil is a commodity that can quite literally send countries to war and hold others to ransom. Unfortunately oil and mineral energy is not as easily renewed as it is depleted, and it is for this reason that renewable energy resources are being constantly sought and tested, some of them very successfully.

Because mineral energy sources are rapidly being depleted, it is really up to every man in the street to do his bit not to waste any form of energy. This is where energy saving starts, at grass roots level. However, even if you still drive that Hummer to work with only yourself in the car, don’t worry, you won’t be forced to ride a Toyota Prius just yet. So it is not all doom and gloom (perhaps).

There is a very great need for alternative energy resources, and at the same time there will be some incredible opportunities to be created for making money out of this. There is a huge consumer demand for mineral energy replacement sources. It makes very good sense that we all make a great effort to reduce our dependency on petroleum and other mineral resources. Technology to accomplish this is already available, and large, world-wide, multinational companies are investing huge amounts of money into getting environmentally friendly energy resources off the ground.

Various cheap and convenient, as well as clean forms of energy are already available. For instance solar panels for heating water and homes have been used for many years already. They are doing this with the hope that solutions in this regard will reap long-term benefits. So far the wind has been seen as one extremely successful renewable energy resource. It can be used to generate electricity by means of wind turbines and this is becoming an increasingly popular solution. We are very accustomed to the conveniences provided by modern technology and we are indeed very fortunate to live in this world. However, we must consider the fact that the natural resources making this possible will not last forever. We have to make a lifestyle change and look towards renewable energy resources to take care of our needs.

Renewable energy includes solar energy, wind power, hydro power, tidal power, geothermal energy, biomass and wave power. These are some of the resources which are available in abundance as they are naturally replenished.

1. Solar energy, obtained from the sun, is being used for industrial as well as domestic purposes. It can be used for cooking heating, cooling and ventilation, among other things. Most sources of renewable energy are directly or indirectly powered by the sun. The heat of the sun is dissipated around the globe in the form of winds and ocean currents.

2. Wind farms installed on large plain tracts of agricultural land utilize the air flows. Renewable energy sources are generally sustainable as they cannot run out and their environmental impacts are generally not as harsh as those of fossil fuels. Disadvantages of Alternative Energy

Alternative energy would seem like a good choice for new home builders and people who are in the market to buy a new automobile. There are disadvantages of alternative energy that realistically need to be considered.

One of the biggest disadvantages of alternative energy is that it cannot be stored like coal and natural gas can. Storage is a huge issue because using alternative energy puts us at the whim of Mother Nature. If there is no wind for a week, relying on wind power becomes a problem. If you are too far north, solar panels will only produce sufficient energy when the Northern Hemisphere of the planet is tilted towards the sun and so on.

Other sources of alternative energy are being studied as well to power not only our homes but our vehicles as well. Hybrid cars have been on the market for a while. They use the same idea as an electric car only they don’t need to be plugged in to recharge. They use their braking system to regenerate power and they still have all of the engine power of a gasoline engine. New technologies to produce a fuel cell vehicle are currently underway along with a hydro-powered hybrid using hydrogen.

Another of the disadvantages of alternative energy is that it can be expensive to implement into our already set up infrastructure. Most of the alternative energy resources available today require a different type of wiring system than what we currently have in place. This could cause the transformation to alternative energy sources to be delayed until we have depleted the remaining amounts of fossil fuels found on our Earth today.

Fossil fuels are less expensive right now than alternative energy due to the amount of changes that have to be made to adapt a alternative energy plan. This proves to be another one of the disadvantages of alternative energy. Fossil fuels are readily available and easy to use. They can be transported to almost any location for use. Power plants are already set up for burning fossil fuels like coal and this makes the whole process less expensive than transforming to alternative energy.

The advantages of using alternative energy will be realized when people are forced to make the change if for example, we deplete all of our fossil fuels or the cost of use simply become prohibitive. The disadvantages will slowly fade away as more and more people use alternative energy as their source of power.
