From in our cars to in our backpacks when we go hiking and even strapped to our wrist while we workout, there is GPS everywhere. The fact is that this technology can go a long way towards getting us where we want to be more quickly and safer than ever.

If you are shopping for your first GPS device or if you are replacing an older unit, you will quickly notice that there are so many choices it can make you dizzy. Major brands like Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom all have a variety of models with options and features galore. Which GPS unit represents the best bang for your buck? It can be helpful to check GPS reviews before you decide.

Online there are a number of resources for you to get consumer guides and user opinions of popular and more obscure devices. Often, the editor will rate the devices that are most popular with users and visitors. By checking out these reviews and doing a little bit of research upfront, you can ensure that you are purchasing a reliable device that will last you a long time.

Another thing you will want to check for before buying is prices. The sticker price of many popular navigation systems can be quite high. It is very easy to find a good deal and save 50% or more off of the cost of your unit just by knowing where to look for the best deal. Superior Solution to Predictive Dialers

Posted on September 11, 2011

Have you been searching for a dialer solution? If you need the dialer for Business-to-Consumer calls or for one-call-close situations, then you will probably do best with a predictive dialer. If you have a B2B dialing need or a more complex call model to follow then you will want to consider a power dialer.

Predictive dialers are the definitive dialer if your main goals are for high call volume and a high percentage of time spent on the phone. This type of dialer will pound through a list of numbers relentlessly, so the main requirement on your end is to have at least ten, but preferably over 20, sales reps logged in to your dialer concurrently. The dialer uses a computer generated algorithm to attempt to keep each rep perpetually moving from one call to the next, and at times this leaves the dialed number hanging-with no rep on the line to talk to whoever answered the call. And it almost always leaves a pause so that the person who has answered has time to recognize it as a telemarketing call and hang up or at the very least is left waiting for a few seconds (which we can all agree is unpleasant). Still, this can be the best option if it fits your business model: if you make B2C calls and only require one fairly brief call to close the sale then this type of dialer will not hurt your sales.

Power dialers are a subtler attempt at the same end result, and because of their smoother operation they are a totally different solution to the same problem. Power dialers make slightly fewer calls in a day, but still offer a highly streamlined process for time-saving while allowing the sales rep the ability to stay behind the wheel of the sales machine.

Power dialers are best-suited to any company that is spending a lot of money on leads, particularly a business-to-business (B2B) sales force. This dialer is powerful, and creates little waste. Power dialers only dial one number at a time, calling the phone rep first, and then calling the lead. The call is placed at the discretion of the phone rep, so he or she is always on the line and ready to go when it is answered. With this dialer, each lead is treated with respect, and has a higher chance of making it through the stages of a sales cycle to the close

Power dialers are the only sensible solution for B2B calls since there are often receptionists or voicemail boxes to navigate and with a predictive dialer that navigation would be impossible at worst, awkward and impolite at best. With a power dialer, the agent is on the phone from the call’s inception so that he or she can maneuver the entire length of this course with human intelligence and presence.

VoIP (Voice Over IP) Codecs

Posted on August 07, 2011

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is a revolutionary technology which takes analog audio signals and turns them into digital data which can be transmitted over the internet. It has the potential to wholly revolutionize the world’s phone system. Its providers are already very successful and major carriers, such as Vonage, AT&T are in the process of setting up VoIP plans across United States. Above all, VoIP is basically very clever invention which has the future capability to replace the so called traditional phones or even cell phones because of quality and cost.

Now we talk about VoIP codecs: Codec which basically stands for Corder-Decorder functions by converting audio signals into compressed digital signals for the purpose of transmission and again into uncompressed signals to replay. This is the essence of Voice over Internet Protocol. Codecs sample the audio signals thousands times per seconds and thereby accomplish the very purpose of conversion. Example- G.711codec which samples the audio at a speed of 64000 times a second. Each tiny sample is converted into digital data and then compressed for transmission. Now after reassembling 64000 samples, pieces of missing audio become very small to the human ear, that when you listen seems like one continuous second. It depends on the codec which is being used that’s what are the sampling rates like 64,000 times per second, 32,000 times per second or 8000 times per second. Out of this most commonly used codec is G.729A codec which has sampling rate of 8000 times per second.

A Codec uses advanced algorithm for the purpose of sorting, sampling, and compressing and finally packetize the data. The most prevalent algorithm is CS-ACELP algorithm in VoIP. It stands for conjugate-structure algebraic-code-excited linear prediction. It functions by organizing and streamlining the bandwidth availability. Another aspect of this is Annex-B which functions by creating the rule of transmission as it states that if no one is talking then don’t send the data. This rule created so much efficiency in its greatest ways that packet switching became superior to circuit switching. The codec works by using the algorithm for converting and sorting everything out. But it fails when you don’t know where to send the data. This problem is handled through the use of soft switches. These switches use a numbering system so as to route the phone call towards the area codes. Based on this numbering system anyone can be located conveniently, no matter in which corner of the world.

Sat Nav Technology Basics

Posted on July 14, 2011

Introduction

Satellite navigation isn’t rocket science once you know how. Satellite Navigation was originally designed for military applications. The first satellite navigation system was Transit, a system deployed by the US military in the 1960s. For these reasons, a satellite navigation system is an essential asset for any aspiring military power. However due to the growing use of satellite navigation e.g. marine use, engineering use and the ever growing in car sat use the growth of satellite navigation for everyday applications is set to continue.

Accuracy

In general, the more satellites used the greater the positioning accuracy. Numerous errors can degrade the accuracy of a positioning. Therefore, the accuracy of the navigation solution depends on how the receiver compensates for the different error sources. This is largely dependent on how the manufacturers of satellite navigation systems implement the relevant decoding on their receivers. Most publicly available receivers have an accuracy if about 5-10 metres. However in built up areas where the signals from the satellites can be corrupted the accuracy can be a little worse. Given the military put the system in place you can be their accuracy will be a lot better than that seen by the public.

Position

Satellite navigation receivers reduce errors by using combinations of signals from multiple satellites and multiple correlators, and then using techniques such as Kalman filtering to combine the noisy, partial, and constantly changing data into a single estimate for position, time, and velocity. Three and four satellites are the minimum needed to determine positions on the surface of the Earth and above it. This is done from a global network of reference stations on the ground, whose positions are known to within centimetres. The best known is called differential satellite navigation, which uses a fixed receiver in a known position as a reference. GPS receivers, which use differential GPS, can have an accuracy error of less than 1 metre and even down to a few centimetres. This type of receiver is now commonly used in many civil engineering works.

How the public benefit from satellite navigation (Sat nav)

The explosion of sat nav usage is due to the low sat nav costs and how practical they are, especially if you are driving alone and you have no one to help map read. With more and more motorists venturing abroad in their cars the sat nav is an indispensable device to help them navigate around foreign countries. The latest sat nav systems also incorporate Traffic Congestion warnings and then work out an alternative route, with voice instructions, to help avoid a lengthy delay in traffic.

Conclusion

Satellite navigation is increasingly becoming a vital component of aircraft, ships and cars and Europe is concerned about relying entirely on the US system. The clearest of these is the fact that satellite navigation will become a fully redundant service for civil aviation users in the event of a satellite or system failure.
